Howard (Lucile, 1885-1960). Landscape with castle ruins, Aran Island, Ireland, oil on canvas, approx. 750 x 1005 mm (29.5 x 39.5 ins), with orig. handwritten label to verso, giving the title (partly indistinct), artist's name and address The American artist Edith Lucile Howard was one of the most important members of the Philadelphia Ten, a progressive of women artists who exhibited together between 1917 and 1945. She was born in Vermont and studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women under Henry Bayley Snell and Elliot Daingerfield, receiving her Diploma in 1908. She frequently travelled abroad, and was particularly attracted to Ireland. (1)
