Description

Papermaking by Hand in America. Chillicothe, OH: Mountain House Press, 1950. Hand-colored frontispiece; plus facsimiles, reproductions of early American watermarks; and tipped-in plates illustrating ream wrappers. Printed on handmade paper using type cut by Dard Hunter Jr. Folio. Original beige buckram over patterned paper boards, paper label to spine, reddish-brown morocco-backed clamshell case. Offset from some plates, tape offset to front flyleaf and to half-title, else a fine copy, light shelfwear to slipcase.

Limited edition, no 45 of 210 copies, signed by Dard Hunter on the colophon. Hunter’s final work to be published by his Mountain House Press, and generally considered his masterpiece, is a history organized chronologically by colony or state according to when the first paper mills were founded. This copy with a Letter Signed ("Dard") tipped to half-title, discussing production of this title; and with a silver print photograph of the Hunter residence, tipped to front endpaper.
