Notes

PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTION
One of the most versatile nonconformist artists, Igor Chelkovski was also editor of the important art journal A-Ya, published in Paris from 1979 to 1986. This journal was the first periodical of "unofficial Russian art," containing much significant information on alternative artistic activities in the Soviet Union.

In his art, Chelkovski has constantly explored the various techniques and design possibilities available in painting and freestanding as well as relief sculpture. In sculpture, his work has included figurative and abstract forms in addition to solid and open linear shapes. Composed of geometric segments, his colorful sculptures were influenced by avant-garde predecessors such as Vladimir Tatlin's counter-reliefs and Kazimir Malevich's Suprematist "architectons."

At the same time, Chelkovski's sculptures invite associations with traditional Russian ecclesiastic woodwork objects, reflecting the artist's ability to infuse his works with emotion and a personal, handmade touch.
