Description

Folio (37 x 22,5 cm): 23 pl. (some minor staining in blank margin, tiny hole in portr. 15). - Very rare, important suite of 21 portraits of 15th-16th-c. artists from the Netherlands. The orig. ed. (1572) was produced by Dominicus Lampsonius and Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570), and eventually published by the widow of the latter, Volcxken Diericx, under the title "Pictorum aliquot celebrium Germaniae inferioris effigies". After her death, the copperplates were bought by fellow Antwerp publisher Th. Galle, who published this undated edition of the series. Our copy contains an engr. title, an engr. title without text, and 21 (of 23) finely engraved numbered portraits of i.a. Hubert & Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, Rogier van der Weyden, Bernard van Orley, Lucas van Leyden, Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Frans Floris. Not present are portraits n. 19 Pieter Bruegel the Elder and 23 Hieronymus Cock (or Joannes Stradanus). Our copy has the title page described in BB:L-693 and the plates of L-694, as the copy in Simoni. - Ref. Very rare first edition of this portfolio with 96 portraits of the most renowned artists of the time, by the painter, engraver and publisher J. Meyssens (1612-1670). Contains 101 engr. plates: title of "Het gulden cabinet" by C. de Bie (1661) by C. Meyssens after A. van Diepenbeeck, dedication to Michel le Blon dated 1649, allegorical depiction of Rome with a city view in the background, title of "Images de divers hommes" by J. Meyssens (1649), portrait of C. de Bie after E. Quellinus and 96 (of 99 or 100?) portraits of 17th-c. painters, engravers and architects from the Netherlands, i.a. O. van Veen, A. Bloemaert, P.P. Rubens, A. Van Dijck, J. Jordaens, A. van Diepenbeeck, W. Hollar, A. Brouwer, D. Teniers, J. Meyssens, A. Sadeler, H. Hondius, P. de Jode, etc. Very good copy with sharp impressions and very large margins. The plates were later used in C. de Bie's "Het Gulden Kabinet" (1661). - Ref. Old marbled calf (corners bumped), covers with gilt frame, gilt flat spine with red leather title label (front joint split, sm. def. at head & tail), sp. edges. Very good copy with sharp impressions and very large margins.

Auction - Terms of sale

The purchaser shall pay, strictly cash, the hammer price, in €, together with a premium of 25 %, eventually plus the resale tax, if applicable: 4 % for hammer prices from € 2000 on, only for original art and if the author died less than 70 years ago.
The auction follows the order indicated by the catalogue. The biddings start at about 80 % of the lowest estimate and each bid must be +/? 10% higher than the previous one. In case of a dispute the lot will be called again.
The auctioneer has the right to refuse a bid, and this without further explanation.
Each buyer by making a bid acknowledges the conditions of sale and the fact that he has inspected the purchased item.
The auctioneer has the right to split a lot or join several lots.
Lots with two or more titles, series or periodicals, or lots with a mention "n.c." and 'sold w.a.f.'are not collated and cannot be returned.
Each buyer is supposed to buy for his own account and cannot claim any commission. Each bidder should inspect the lots during the exhibition. Under no circumstances can an item, once sold, be returned. For lots bought via a bidding order remarks or complaints, also concerning the authenticity of the items, should be formulated within 2 weeks after the auction. After that delay no item can be returned.
