Folio (37 x 22,5 cm): 23 pl. (some minor staining in blank margin, tiny hole in portr. 15). - Very rare, important suite of 21 portraits of 15th-16th-c. artists from the Netherlands. The orig. ed. (1572) was produced by Dominicus Lampsonius and Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570), and eventually published by the widow of the latter, Volcxken Diericx, under the title "Pictorum aliquot celebrium Germaniae inferioris effigies". After her death, the copperplates were bought by fellow Antwerp publisher Th. Galle, who published this undated edition of the series. Our copy contains an engr. title, an engr. title without text, and 21 (of 23) finely engraved numbered portraits of i.a. Hubert & Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, Rogier van der Weyden, Bernard van Orley, Lucas van Leyden, Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Frans Floris. Not present are portraits n. 19 Pieter Bruegel the Elder and 23 Hieronymus Cock (or Joannes Stradanus). Meyssens (1649), portrait of C. de Bie after E. Quellinus and 96 (of 99 or 100?) portraits of 17th-c. painters, engravers and architects from the Netherlands, i.a. O. van Veen, A. Bloemaert, P.P. Rubens, A. Van Dijck, J. Jordaens, A. van Diepenbeeck, W. Hollar, A. Brouwer, D. Teniers, J. Meyssens, A. Sadeler, H.
