Lot 203: Isaac Ouwater (Amsterdam 1750-1793)

Amsterdam: The 't Spaarne canal in Slooterdijk with the ferry office and the tollgate on the left hand side signed and dated 'I k Ouwater Fecit 1778' (lower left) oil on canvas 40.1 x 53.2 cm. PROVENANCE Anon. Sale, Bearnes, Torquay, 3 June 1975, lot 347, illustrated. with R. Noortman, Maastricht. NOTES The 't Spaarne canal was dug in 1631, prompting the construction of many country and tea houses along the waterside. By the 18th Century, more than one hundred of these had been built.
