Notes

'Another quality, related to Ivor Roberts-Jones's interest in blindness, is captured by the sculptor in his recent head of Shostakovich where, [as Roberts-Jones commented on the work], "the huge lenses of his spectacles act as barricades against what he sees outside him and gives the head a sense of inwardness"'. (P. Cannon-Brookes, Ivor Roberts-Jones, London, 1983, p. 73). The present work is related to Roberts-Jones' interest in blind figures, which capture an innner visionary quality. The sculpture series of this subject was inspired by the inward-looking Buddhas and Bhoddisatvas seen on War service in India and Burma.
