Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), in red uniform with gold-embroidered navy collar, gold epaulette, white shirt and stock, wearing the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the blue moiré sash and breast-star of the Order of the Garter, the cross of a Knight Commander of the Order of Bath, and the metal of the Military Gold Cross
signed and dated 'J. Parent 1816' (lower right)
on ivory

The present miniature was painted during the occupation of France by allied forces following the Battle of Waterloo, when Wellington was commander-in-chief of the occupying forces. Parent also painted Napoleon before his fall from power, as well as other generals of the Empire.
A rectangular portrait miniature by the artist of the Duke of Wellington, signed with his initials, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see B. Long, Catalogue of the Jones Collection, London, 1923, p. 90, no. 622, illustrated pl. 59.
