Description

The American tug Edgar F. Luckenbach signed and inscribed 'J.Stuart Blackton./73 E. 120'St./N.Y.' (lower right) oil on canvas 22 x 36 in. (55.9 x 91.5 cm.) NOTES Built at Camden, NJ by John Dialogue & Co. in 1891 for Lewis & John Luckenbach of New York. She was a sea going tug, she served as a stake boat in the 1893 America's Cup. In 1908 she was sunk off the Battery in a collision with the ship Pawnee in the fog. She was raised that same year and returned to service. In 1916 she was renamed the Luckenbach II and was then sold to the US Navy in 1917. SALESROOM NOTICE the artist should read: J. Stuart Blackton.
