In the 1930s, Carington Smith studied at East Sydney Technical College and then later at the Royal Academy Schools and in Paris. He settled in Tasmania where he taught for many years. In 1949, he won the Sulman Prize and exhibited for 20 years in the Archibald prize before winning in 1963.
