Notes

A conspirator and close associate of the 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, Rumsey was one of the leading advocates of the Rye House plot to assassinate Charles II in 1683. Originally a Cornet in Cromwell's New Model Army, following the restoration he served as a Lieutenant-Colonel with English forces in Portugal for seven years under Lord Schomberg, before becoming associated with Shaftesbury in 1670.
