NOTES In her monograph on the artist, Susan Donahue Kuretsky dates the present work to circa 1655 and notes that it is probably the companion piece to a Merry Company with a Violinist formerly in the collection of Walter P. Chrysler, Norfolk, Virginia, (sold, Sotheby's, New York, 1 June 1989, lot 53). She further notes the difficulty in constructing a firm provenance for the present work due to the confusion between it and a copy, formerly with Julius B”hler, Munich.
