Notes

Perkois was born in Middelburg, the son of a reknowned doctor. In 1776, he enrolled as a student in the 'Tekenakademie' in The Hague, where he came under the influence of Aart Schouman. On returning to his native town the following year, Perkois rapidly became one of the driving forces of the Middelburg Tekenakademie (Drawing Academy), gaining a reputation chiefly as a portrait draughtsman, working variously in coloured chalks, watercolour, and the delicately applied pencil seen in a fine self-portrait, sold some years ago in Amsterdam.υ1 1.
