The 197-ton snow Fleece was built at Arbroath in 1850 and owned by Kidd & Son, also of Arbroath. She began her career trading out of her home port to the Baltic under Captain Kidd but soon changed her route to one from Dundee to Galatz, then under Turkish rule but now in Romania, under Captain Anderson until she disappears from record in the late 1850s.

Dated 1850, the year Fleece entered service, this portrait was undoubtedly executed to mark her maiden voyage to the Baltic.
