Self-portrait, oil on canvas, 105 x 81 cm, framed, (Wo)

The present work was traditionally considered to be by Rembrandt until Prof. Werner Sumowski identified it as "a first-rate self-portrait by Rembrandt's student Jacobus Levecq that shows a new apsect of his art" (see under Certificates).
Certificates: A. Martin Wild, 6 March 1927, as autograph work by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn; Prof. Dr. Vogelsang, Utrecht, 5 May 1930, as autograph work by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn; G. Gratama, Director of the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem, 19 April 1930, as autograph work Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn; Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, April 1930, as autograph work by Rembrandt Harmensz. von Rijn (lost); Prof. Dr. Werner Sumowski, 5 April 2004: as an “early work by the rare Jacobus Levecq”. In his attribution, Sumowski refers to an identical model which appeared on the Amsterdam art market in 1999 (see Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandtschüler, 1983, vol. 5, no. 212, repr.).
