NOTE

Levecq is recorded as a pupil of Rembrandt's in 1653 and he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Dordrecht two years later. Although active for much of his life in Dordrecht, the city where he was born and died, Levecq also resided in Paris for a long time. This portrait may be compared to Levecq's signed painting in Paris, Jules Porges collection (Witt Library mount), and with his portrait of an unknown sitter in Rotterdam, Boymans-van Beuningen Museum (inv. no. 1472; reproduced in Museum Boymans-van Beuningen Rotterdam. Old Paintings 1400-1900, Rotterdam 1972, p. 69).
