Kerkhof in Tanger inscribed 'Tanger.' (lower left) pen and black ink and black chalk heightened with white on paper 23.5 x 41.5 cm. NOTES After winning the Prix de Rome in 1884, the artist was able to travel for two years to Italy, Spain and Maroc. During his stay in this country, he also spent some time in Tanger. In a letter to his teacher Auguste Alleb‚ he enthousiastically described his impressions as follows: "'t Zijn allemaal schilderijen ook van kleur, komt me voor. Dan weer vrouwen die hun zondag doorbrengen al keuvelend op de graven van mannen of familiebetrekkingen, bij mekaar gehurkt als spooksels op een mooie grond tussen stekelige alo‚'s." (See R.
