PROVENANCE: Maxime Hébert (1853-1945) Collection, Paris (inv. no. 1091, with collector’s label inscribed ‘Duchesse de Beaufort’ ). With Leo R. Schidlof, from whom acquired by Ernst Holzscheiter in London, 11 February 1953 (inv. nos. MD/0610 and 85). The sitter is possibly Mary Somerset, Duchess of Beaufort (1630-1715), née Cappell, wife of Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort (1629-1700).
