Description

Jacques Louis Gautier (born 1831), a pair of bronze figures, Mephistopheles and Macbeth, the demon modelled with one hoof and legs crossed, Macbeth as one of the witches with her broom; on square tapered bases with Duplan et Salles foundry Mark, 27.25ins

Gautier made his Salon debut in 1850 with a bronze entitled "Misery". Mephistopheles was modeled some time in the early 1850's and was first shown in the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1855, where it received great acclaim . Casts of the model were hugely popular and were in some of the great collections of the day includeing Napoleon III. The figure was edited by Duplan and Salles. After which Gautier modeled as a pair a equally sinister witch form Macbeth.
