Notes

Genzano lies to the south east of Rome, on the shores of Lake Nemi. Hackert made two dated views in the area in 17841, but was clearly also there somewhat earlier in his long stay in Italy. Claudia Nordhoff has in fact proposed, on stylistic grounds, that an undated painted view of Lake Nemi, now in Weimar, and also a destroyed watercolour formerly in Berlin, were executed around 17692, and the date on the present drawing corroborates her assumption of such an earlier visit. 1.
