Two decorative and skilfully painted studies of native British birds, by the author of Harmonia Ruralis. James Bolton, painter, illustrator and 'good field naturalist' (Jackson) remained in Yorkshire throughout his life, making studies of plants, insects and birds. Having published works on ferns and fungi, from 1792 he began a series of drawings of British song birds, publishing Harmonia Ruralis with etched plates in 1794-96. Drawing the birds from life, Bolton was particularly noted for placing them, as in the present watercolours, in a setting which indicated their natural habitat and food source. It is likely that the birds portrayed here are the Red Antwerp Smerle Pigeon and the Magpie Pigeon; identifiable plants include Plantago lanceolata, a ribwort commonly found around Halifax, and Anthoxanthum odoratum.
