Green entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1791 where he was noticed by Sir Joshua Reynolds who allowed him to copy many of his pictures. This led to his becoming a popular portrait painter in London during the early 19th century. In 1805 he was married to Mary Byrne, a well-known miniature painter who, like her husband, exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Society of British Artists and The British Institution. A number of Green's portraits are held in public institutions such as Benjamin West, President of the Royal Academy (Metropolitan Museum, New York) and Thomas Stothard, R.A. (National Portrait Gallery, London).
