James MacDonald Barnsley 1861 - 1929 Canadian oil on canvas Sailing in the Harbour A04F-E02310-003 12.25 x 20 inches 31.1 x 50.8 centimeters signed, dated 1883 and inscribed Paris Robert Ayre, "J.M. Barnsley - Painter of the Sea", Canadian Art, March/April Issue #96, 1965, pages 22 - 27 In 1883 Barnsley was studying in Paris under Luigi Loir, Otto de Thoren and Felix de Vuillefroy. He lived in Paris for five years and found success there, exhibiting in five Paris salons, where he won a silver medal in 1885 and a gold medal in 1886. Barnsley was primarily known for his spirited marine subjects, and Robert Ayre wrote that: "Barnsley painted the sea and its shipping, the shore and its gear, with fresh, sparkling colour and brisk, impressionist touch."
