Notes

Amasa M. Eaton (1841-1914) and Charles F. Eaton (b. 1842) were the children of Levi C. Eaton (1811-1852) and Sarah Brown Mason (1804-1864). Sarah was the grand-daughter of John Brown (1736-1803), the wealthiest man in Providence and a renowned patron of Rhode Island decorative arts. Levi was Sarah's second husband; her first husband and three of her first four children died prematurely and she married Levi in 1837. Amasa graduated from Brown University in 1861 and from Harvard University in 1878, where he earned a law degree. He fought with the First Rhode Island Volunteers in the Civil War. He served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives twice, from 1865-1866 and 1872-1874. Among his many other distinctions, he was president of the Rhode Island Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. In 1873, he married Alice Maude Mary Dunnell of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Charles trained in Paris as an artist and, in 1886, he and his family moved to Santa Barbara, where he worked as a designer in metal, glass and leather. He became nationally known when he was recognized and reviewed in House Beautiful (Summer, 1903 and February, 1904) as well as The Craftsman, 1904. He submitted work to both the 1904 St. Louis Exposition as well as the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle, where he won a third grand prize.
