James Thurber (Ohio, 1894 - 1961), "Atonement," (Picking a Flower), ink on paper, estate stamped lower center, label verso from Keny Galleries, Columbus, Ohio, measures 8.50 x 6.25 inches, overall in the frame 14 x 12 inches. CONDITION: Good, some waviness to paper. A long-time cartoonist for "The New Yorker" magazine, he became one of America's best-known illustrators in the first half of the 20th century. He was born and grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and attended Ohio State University where he edited the humorous undergraduate magazine. After World War II, he worked as a newspaper reporter for publications including the "Columbus Dispatch," the "Paris Tribune," and the "New York Evening Post."
