Huitemavan Bredehoff left Utrecht and settled in Indonesia. She gave the present work on permanent loan to the Centraal Museum Utrecht. The painter Jan Anthonisz. van Ravesteyn, who is said to have spent his entire life in The Hague, was an extraordinarily prolific portraitist who also received commissions from high-ranking personalities, as is illustrated, for example, by his portrait of John II of Nassau (Royal Picture Gallery, The Hague). Ravesteyn held various positions at the painter's guild of The Hague, were he was a "hoofdman" and several times also its chairman. His paintings figure in numerous private collections, but also in major museums, such as at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York or at the Louvre.
