THE MARRIAGE AT CANA

measurements note
458 by 601mm

signed in black ink, lower right: Quellinus fect.

pen and grey ink and grey and blue wash, heightened with white, over black and red chalk, on paper washed light brown

PROVENANCE

With Paul Prouté, Paris, 1989

NOTE

The architectural setting seen here is very similar to that in Quellinus' painting of the same subject in the Abbey Church at Tongerlo, but the disposition of the figures is different, so the drawing cannot necessarily be considered a modello for the painting. Establishing a dating for the drawing is hard, as Quellinus' drawing style does not seem to have undergone any very radical evolution; there are close similarities with dated drawings ranging from the 1660 Conversion of Zaccheus, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-A59), to the 1685 Christ with Disciples and Children, in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. 9921).
