Since the 1960s, Jan Roeland has been painting everyday objects like envelopes, boxes, tables, hammers, ducks and plants. He always paints in series. For him, an object is an exhaustible source of inspiration for a meticulous investigation into shape, colour and perceptions of space. Although Roeland's objects are more or less recognisable, abstraction is a key feature of his work. This lends his work a hallucinatory tension, not only between figuration and abstraction, but also between aspects such as shape and colour, motionless and movement and in the positioning of an object in relation to another. Perhaps what appeals most to the imagination in Roeland's paintings is their intense colour palette and sense of humour. His work is represented in many museums and private collections. Roeland was awarded the Sandberg Prize in 1998.
