Item Overview

Description

oil on canvas, a fragment

Dimensions

65.2 by 57.2 cm.

Provenance

A. Kalmer, Hotel le Peletier, Paris, by 1956 (the original version and as by A. Goubau).

Notes

This painting has been reduced in size no earlier than 1956, when it was recorded in the collection of A. Kalmar, Paris, with still its full composition (photograph in the files of the RKD, The Hague). The original composition was elongated to the left and showed an extensive view of an army camp and three soldiers in the foreground. Looking at the gaze of the two horsemen in the painting as it is now, it is still obvious they are looking at something. The original composition can be compared to a drawing by Van der Hecke, signed and dated 1656, which is in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 1084).
