This original representation of the four evangelists was first given to Van Noordt by Werner Sumowski. It is dated stylistically to circa 1659. The head of the evangelist in the foreground relates to the head of one of the two elders in the artist's Susanna and the Elders, in Utrecht (op. cit., pp. 98-9, no. 6). The head of the other foreground evangelist is inspired by head studies by Jacob Adriaensz. Backer, including a study in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden. The picture may have been painted for the artist's younger brother Lucas who had completed his theological studies in 1652.
