Description

Jane Botsford Armstrong (American, b. 1921) "The Great One", a large carved Italian black-and-gold marble sculpture of a hawk, ca. 1970, the bird modeled with open mouth and perched on rockwork, initialed "JBA", mounted on a rectangular ebonized wood base, figure h. 18-1/2", w. 19", base h. 2-1/4", w. 20-1/2", d. 18". Provenance: The estates of David and Eula Wintermann. Accompanied by the original bill of sale from Frank K. M. Rehn, Inc., Madison Avenue, New York, dated December 15, 1971. Armstrong, born in Buffalo, New York in 1921, has been blind since birth. Despite her visual impairment, the talented artist has hundreds of her stone and marble works in collections in Europe, the United States and Canada. She is a member of the Sculptors Guild and fellow of the National Sculpture Society.
