Reminiscent of her native city of Calcutta, Jayashree Chakravarty's canvases are often bustling, crowded and teeming with energetic imagery and line. Her recent work moves away from the cartographic and figural themes that had dominated her paintings in the 1990's to a more spiritual subject matter. Reducing her typically playful color palette to a subdued grayscale, the artist depicts a proud profile in communion with the blossoming fauna she has placed around it. Chakravarty, however, masterfully maintains her characteristic use of heavy line and impasto while still allowing the serenity of the figure to rise above the frenzied linear foliage.
