Jean-Baptiste Duchesne, the artist's father, his right hand tucked into his brown coat with blue trim on collar and sleeves, high-collared grey shirt
signed and dated 'Duchesne de Gisors. 1798.' (mid-right)
2 5/8 in. (67 mm.) diam, rectangular ormolu frame by Valette of Paris with pierced foliate surmount, brown leather travelling case, tooled with initials 'C.D.'

Notes

Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Duchesne, born in Gisors, the son of a sculptor, is more commonly known as an enamel painter. He was commissioned to complete the series of enamel portraits in the Louvre, a group begun by Jean Petitot over a hundred years earlier. He also painted for Napoleon, the Duchess of Berry (see lot 59) and the Duchess of Angoulême and carried out a series of enamels after Sir William Charles Ross, R.A.
