Like his teachers Théodore Rousseau and Diaz de la Pena, Jean Émile Renié also specialised in depicting landscape views of the forest of Fontainebleau. He entered the Salon in 1867 with two landscape paintings, Chemin conduisant à une carrière abandonée, forêt de Fontainebleau, and Après l'orage, paysage. He travelled extensively in France, and visited Spain and Italy, where he produced many views of Venice. In 1883, he became a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais.
