Property from the Rademakers Collection
(lot 139-153)

Christie's Amsterdam is delighted to present a selection of works from the renowned Rademakers Collection of Dutch Romantic Paintings. The collector has given Christie's free reign to select 15 pictures to be sold at auction in our Amsterdam saleroom. Three of these works were displayed in De Hallen in Haarlem for the exhibition "Grand and Glorious, Sublime Landscapes of the Dutch Romanticism".
Jef Rademakers started his collection, which can be considered as one of the most important Romantic paintings collections in the Benelux, after selling his television production company. For Mr. Rademakers collecting is not just a hobby, but it is as stated by himself, rather a passion, an illness, even an addiction. By studying literature, visiting museums, fairs and auction houses around the world and doing research at the RKD in The Hague he has become a connoisseur in his own right

Being a true Romantic at heart, as he also showed with his poems and novels that he wrote after his television career, the choice for the Dutch Romantics came quite natural as Jef Rademakers possesses a strong sense of nostalgia and is drawn to the escapism that is a key element of Romanticism. Just as the philosophers and artists of the time he emphasizes the importance of history as something definite and safe that can offer comfort; the perfect antithesis of the uncertain and fatal phenomena we call the future.

Christie's and Jef Rademakers have had a warm bond for over 25 years and share his passion for Romantic Art. Therefore we are proud to introduce buyers worldwide to these superb works of art which were brought together by this remarkable and passionate collector.
Christie’s charges a premium to the buyer on the Hammer Price of each lot sold at the following rates: 29.75% of the Hammer Price of each lot up to and including €20,000, plus 23.8% of the Hammer Price between €20,001 and €800.000, plus 14.28% of any amount in excess of €800.000. Buyer’s premium is calculated on the basis of each lot individually.
