Bronze with black patina
France, late 20th century
Jean-Louis Toutain (1948-2008) – French sculptor and painter
Signed in the cast ‘Toutain’ as well as numbered ‘2/3’

Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist; Swiss gallery, Lausanne
Small figure of an elephant sculpted in the round in abstracted design with soft, voluptuous and organic-like curves

Toutain's characteristic style is distinguished by voluminous bodies, whose limbs suggest movement and allow the viewer's imagination much flexibility. His curvy works, predominately with black patina, recall works by Henry Moore, Niki de Saint-Phalle and Fernando Botero, which probably all inspired the artist’s design vocabulary.

Condition:
The artwork is in very good condition with minimal scratches. The size measures c. 37 x 34 x 20.5 cm.

Jean-Louis Toutain (1948-2008)

Born in Toulouse, the artist was already fascinated by painting, drawing and modeling as a boy. At 14 he enrolled at the art academy. Over time, he continuously developed his technical skills and finally found his own individual design at the age of 40. In 1991 Toutain received the Médaille Ouvriers de France for his sculptural work. His works are represented in numerous public and private collections, but also at public places, such as his first large sculpture Maternitée, which was purchased in 1995 by the city of Toulouse and is now positioned on the Square Charles de Gaulle in Toulouse.
