Item Overview

Description

Jean Marie Toulgouat (French, 1927 - 2005), "Jean's Garden," oil on carson, signed and dated 1983 at lower right, verso with a label from Keny Galleries of Columbus, Ohio, measures 15 x 20.75 inches unframed, 20.75 x 26.25 inches framed. CONDITION: Good. Toulgouat's entire life was dominated by the legacy of his step great-grandfather, Claude Monet. Born at Giverny in 1927 (the year after Monet's death), Jean-Marie Toulgouat spent his childhood years in the artist's house, where he was taught to paint by Blanche Hoschedé Monet, who was both Monet's stepdaughter and the widow of his elder son, Jean. His grandfather was the American impressionist painter Theodore Butler, who had married Monet's stepdaughter, Suzanne. In addition to his work as a painter, Toulgouat served as an advisor to Daniel Terra, the noted American art collector and founder of the American Museum at Giverny. Toulgouat had biannual one-man exhibitions in London at the Francis Kyle Gallery from 1985 to 2003, and sold very well in Britain; the gallery held a retrospective of his work in 2006. He also exhibited in France, Holland and the United States.
