NOTE

Carton had a very precocious talent for sculpture. His work was noted at the age of 13 by Wlérick who took him on as a pupil. In 1928 Carton entered the Paris Art school where his sculpture was singled out by Despiau after that artist attended the school's competition exhibition in 1929. He then began to take part in group exhibitions with Despiau and Maillol. In 1947 Carton was chosen to exhibit in a major exhibition of French sculpture in Prague in the company of such greats as Degas, Rodin, Maillol, Bourdelle, Couturier and Lipchitz.

His fascination with the human figure was the focus of his work throughout his career. A major exhibition of Carton's work was held in 1988 at the Musée de la Poste, Paris.
