Item Overview

Description

Jean Picart le Doux (1902-1982) VALET DE TRÉFLE, 1973 signed in the weave lower left; Aubusson PLC stamp also in the weave, lower right Aubusson wool tapestry (no. 1 from an edition of 6) 154 by 102cm., 60.5 by 40.25in. Aubusson became the hub for tapestry design and production in the 20th century, thanks to Jean Lurçat and Jean Picart le Doux, who settled there in 1939 for the purpose of creating a new tapestry industry at the request of the French Ministry. In 1945, Lurçat, along with the artists Marc Saint-Saëns and Jean Picart Le Doux, founded the Association of Tapestry Cartoon-Painters, which spearheaded the revival of tapestry as a form of original site specific modern architectural decoration. Jean Picart le Doux is known as one of the most creative and prolific tapestry designers of the 20th century. His works are highly sought after and form part of many private and public collections internationally. This work, Valet de Tréfle, was designed from an earlier cartoon by the artist executed in 1972.
