Description

Jerome Conor 1874-1943 FEMALE PORTRAIT Bronze, 10" high, (25.5cm), signed and dated 1926.
Born in Annascaul, Co. Kerry and at the age of nine his family emigrated to America. He had a hard upbringing and turned his hand to many trades before settling down as a stone mason and sculptor. His reputation grew and he was given numerous important public commissions in various American States. He returned to Ireland in 1925 to undertake the Lusitania project, a long and costly affair. He exhibited numerous works in Ireland and carried out public commissions. He was one of Ireland's finest sculptors though he ended his life in impoverished circumstances.
