Provenance: Heye, Dresden; collection of Georg Schäfer, Schweinfurt Johann Caspar Bosshardt: This artist came from Pfäffikon and was known for his depictions of Swiss history. He first trained as an artist in Zurich then later in Dusseldorf and Munich. In Dusseldorf he studied under, among others, Wilhelm Schirmer and Wilhelm von Shadow. The painting offered here is an example of Bosshardt's turn towards genre painting in the 1870s. His resulting popularity is attested by the fact that this painting was re-exhibited three years after its initial showing at the Paris World Exhibition in 1878.
