Notes

Fischer, the son of an engraver, was born in Hanover in 1786 and died there in 1875. He studied in his home town and became the pupil of the court painter, J.H.Ramberg. He moved to London in 1810 and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1811 to 1871. His work gained the approval of King George IV and he was commissioned to paint miniatures of the Royal Family and military uniforms for the Prince Regent. Twenty-three small military watercolours, dated between 1812 and 1817, are in the Royal Collection (MIL 1104-26). A payment to Fischer of 15 gns on 20th August 1837, for small military drawings, presumably relates to some of these. Each of the watercolours included in the present lot show soldiers of the various armies invoved in the Napoleonic War and are variations of some of the drawings in the Royal Collection
