Heinsius was primarily a portrait miniaturist, and the present work is an unusual example of the artist working full-scale. Juliane Schmieglitz-Otten (Miniaturen der Revolutionszeit 1789-1799 aus der Sammlung Tansey, Munich, 2005, p. 200) points out that Heinsius worked from the 1790s until his death in Orleans.
