Item Overview

Description

*Johann Matthias Kager (1575-1634) the triumph of neptune and amphitrite. Pen and black ink and gray wash. 260 by 392mm. Provenance: Henry Graves & Co (L.2990; number 80991). Two other drawings by Kager of the same subject are in the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut (inv.1948.137) and in the Hessisches Landes-museum, Darmstadt (see Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Drawings from the Holy Roman Empire 1540-1680, exh.cat., Princeton University Art Museum, et al., 1982-3, pp.106-7). These drawings are dated circa 1615, as is another of Mary with Saints Catherine and Anna, in Stuttgart (Staatsgalerie, inv.C22/12), in which the figure of St. Catherine is very similar to that of Amphitrite in the present drawing, suggesting that the latter should be similarly dated
