Notes

Probably dating to the mid-1640s, this picture reflects the influence of Govaert Flinck. Other similar pictures by Spilberg of around the same period are a Young Girl with a Dog (formerly Zurich, Galerie Kurt Meissner) and Jael (Berlin, Staatliche Museen, Gemäldegalerie), which is dated 1644. The pose of the sitter in the present picture, with her arm resting on a ledge, recalls, in reverse, the pose in Rembrandt's Self Portrait of 1640, in the National Gallery, London, which in turn derives from Titian's Portrait of a Man, also in the National Gallery, London. Rembrandt had seen Titian's portrait after it was bought by his acquaintance Alfonso Lépez from the art dealer Lucas van Uffelen.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis
