Item Overview

Description

Serigraph in colors on cardboard
Germany, 1972
Johannes Schreiter (born 1930) – German painter, graphic and stained-glass artist
Signed lower right in pencil ‘Schreiter’
Numbered and titled lower left in pencil ‘63/100 Fazit 27/1972/S – Versteck einer bevorzugten Katastrophe’
Image dimensions: 55.2 x 80.2 cm

Until 1987, the German artist created so-called ‘fire collages’ in which he explores the theme of construction and organics by combining traces of fire with geometric elements. In the present serigraph from 1972 the representation of such an organic-looking burning trace can be seen, which is inserted between rectangular areas of color and superimposed partly by rectangular forms.

The serigraph in color is signed lower right in pencil ‘Schreiter’ and lower left numbered and titled ‘63/100 Fazit 27/1972/S – Versteck einer bevorzugten Katastrophe’. There is a small upsetting in the lower edge with two tiny defects. The margins are slightly stained, overall the sheets shows minor signs of age and wear. The overall impression is good. The image measures 55.2 x 80.2 cm, the sheet 67.1 x 91.2 cm.

Johannes Schreiter (born 1930)
Born in Buchholz in the Ore Mountains, the artist studied from 1949 to 1957 at the academies in Münster, Mainz and Berlin. From 1963 to 1987 Schreiter was a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Frankfurt on the Main and even was its director for a few years. Today the artist lives and works in the Hessian town of Langen. Johannes Schreiter is primarily known for his stained glass windows. They can be admired for example in churches in Osnabrück and Goslar, the Minster of Ulm and in the cathedrals of Mainz and Augsburg. (fea)
