JOHN A. COUGHLIN (American, 1885-1965) Detective Story Magazine, pulp cover, August 24, 1929 Oil on canvas, laid on board 27.5 x 19.5 in. Signed lower right Pulp covers from the 1920s are very scarce, and this cover features the pulp detective, Maxwell Sanderson. In 1915 John Coughlin painted the cover for the first issue of Street and Smith's Detective Story Magazine, and for a twenty year stretch, he painted nearly all of the title's covers.
