Notes

* The Manchester Bank was the first untitled bank established in the city of Manchester by four partners Messrs Allen, Byrom, Segwick and Place.
The Bank and its Partners prospered until the year 1788.
At this time there was great financial hardship in the region with over 360 bankruptcies recorded in that year. The Manchester bank also succumbed and recorded a loss of £360,000. However the branch in London was still operating and had to be informed.
Allen the only surviving original partner and the existing shareholders held a meeting in St Ann's Square where it was decided that they should all draw lots to determine who should ride down to London, as drafts had to be presented to the London branch to see if they were to be dishonoured and whether there were to be instructions to close the Manchester branch. The choice fell upon Mr Edward Rushton of Slade House, Levenshulme, who with his father and brother had considerable financial interests at stake. Rushton, a noted Horseman left Manchester the same day, riding his own horse Rodney as far as Derby. From then onwards getting relays at the Inns on the road to London, where he arrived at 10am the following morning.
The ride of almost 200 miles in 21 hours was considered a fine performance, considering the delays caused by changing horses and the state of the roads at the time. Rushton rode fully armed as Highwaymen were a constant threat. The fast coaches took 29 hours to complete the same journey.
On presenting the drafts he carried to the London agents of the Manchester Bank, they were of course dishonoured.
What funds that remained were saved in Manchester and then distributed amongst the main creditors.

* John Boultbee was the better known of twins, both artists, who attended The Royal Academy Schools during Sir Joshua Reynold's presidency. His works are on display in several major UK museums and abroad.
