Notes

The following drawings form part of the collection of Derek Linstrum, architect, conservationist and distinguished architectural historian. Derek was always based in Leeds and both his mother and grandfather were architects. Although he designed the additional accommodation required to turn the late Georgian country house Bretton Hall, Yorkshire, into a college of adult education (1960-63), it was as a conservationist and historian that Derek was best known. As Radcliffe Lecturer in Conservation at the Kings Manor, University of York, he achieved an international reputation as a teacher, adviser and writer on conservation matters. As a historian, he wrote extensively on the architecture of Leeds and the West Riding of Yorkshire. His work at Bretton Hall sparked his interest in Jeffry Wyatt (later Sir Jeffry Wyatville), who remodelled Bretton in about 1815. His book on Wyatville remains a standard work, as does his book on Cuthbert Brodrick, the enigmatic architect of Leeds Town Hall.
