This image shows an iconic figure of George Washington arriving by boat at the Battery in New York on April 23, 1789, just one week before his April 30 inauguration as first president of the United States. This fanciful and almost royal portrayal might bear comparison with the major work by Peter Paul Rubens, Arrival of Marie de' Medici at Marseilles, 1622-1625 (Musee du Louvre).
