A Gentleman, called Walter Mansfield, wearing slate-grey coat, pale blue waistcoat, frilled white chemise and stock
signed on reverse J.C./ to JS/1797, gold frame, the reverse with gold mounted blue glass border around glazed aperture to reveal gold monogram WM on plaited hair and with collection label of Ernest Salaman
Oval, 80mm. (3 1/8ins.) high

Dating to 1797, this is an early example of Comerford's work, from the year he first appears to have advertised his trade in Finn's Leinster Journal (13 September 1797) "Likenesses in Oils and Miniature by J. Comerford.....".
